‘Mother Full of Love’ was written by my late brother, Steve Lovett. Steve was a
great songwriter and poet. He never received any public recognition, but he was well
respected and loved for his music and poetry, by folks who knew him and his work.
Starting young, he wrote over 300 songs and countless poems, and most of them have
been lost. I played this song hundreds of times with him. I would play the guitar, and he
would sing.
Steve wrote this song about our mother, Thelma Lovett. She was born
December 6 th , 1913, and passed June 6, 1973. She was a gentle and loving soul with a
heart of gold. One of the lines Steve wrote, ‘Thank you for the cornbread, and thank
you for the beans’, relates to our childhood. Cornbread, potatoes and beans were our
staple meal much of the time for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Thelma was known for
her kindness and generosity and was willing to share her beans and cornbread with
anyone in the neighborhood who was down and out.
The musicians on this song were Jimmy Mattingly on fiddle, Kent Wells on
electric guitar, Paul Hollowell on piano, and Jeff Forrest on bass guitar and drums. Jeff
also mixed this song and tutored me on the backing vocals. I did the vocals, backing
vocals, and acoustic guitar.
Thank you to all of them, and most of all, thank you for reading this and visiting
this website.
